Anchor with rope and coral roses
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A detailed drawing of a vintage-style anchor with a coiled rope running down its shaft. Coral and peach roses, teal leaves and small blue flowers cluster around the crown and lower arms of the anchor. The engraved black linework is shaded with fine hatching, and the colour sits in the flowers against a plain white background.

Dear Nell, the boat is tied up at Mersea now and the harbourmaster has finally stopped asking why I keep coming back to the same berth. I found your grandmother's old rope in the locker under the stern seat, the one with the tarred splice she always said was the only honest knot on the Colne. I've coiled it round the shaft of the anchor we never sold, the one with the engraving your father liked so much, and I've wound the coral roses from the florist's bucket through the crown where the flukes catch the light.

It looks foolish, I know. A grown man with a bucket of flowers and a dead woman's rope, standing on a quay at six in the morning while the gulls argue over the fish boxes. But the anchor held through the squall off the Naze, and I thought it deserved something prettier than rust for its trouble. The peach roses went first, then the teal leaves, and the little blue flowers I couldn't name so I just called them Gertie's, which she would have hated.
Come down when you're free. The tide's right on Saturday, and I'll show you where the flukes bite into the mud. Bring the good tea, not the tin one. I'll be at the end of the pontoon with the kettle and a rope that finally knows what it's for.
Your loving uncle, Ray
