Traditional style flash design of a red and white ball above a red polka dot flower and a blue rose, with gold banners reading I and CHOOSE YOU and YOU.

Poke Ball and rose flash with I choose you banners

Traditional · Colour · Flash

The design shows a red and white ball with a central button, stacked beneath a red polka dot flower with green leaves and a blue rose. Gold ribbon banners wrap the composition, reading I, CHOOSE and YOU. Bold black outlines, flat fills and small motion marks around the ball give it a classic flash look, with the colours set against a cream background.

The fête was due to open at two, but at half past one the Welfare hall still smelled of wet emulsion and Mrs Pryce was up the stepladder insisting the bunting go gold to red, gold to red, the way the colliery had always done it. I held the box of ribbon and tried not to breathe on the paint. Somebody had put the good scissors in the wrong drawer, so the ribbons were torn by hand, and every tear sounded like someone small giving up.

Our Tomas had the ball. He'd found it on the tip behind the old screens, a red and white thing the size of a turnip with a grey button in the middle that clicked when you pressed it. Dad said it was rubbish from the pit. Tomas said it was waiting to be picked. Every night on the back step he held it up to the lamp and said, low and serious, 'I choose you', and it gave a small click back, which settled the matter as far as he was concerned.

At the fête, the raffle drum was turned by Mrs Pryce's granddaughter, who had not spoken since her dad went south for work. The prize was a tin of pears. When the child reached in, her hand came out with nothing, so Tomas walked across the hall with his ball and set it in her palm. She pressed the button. It clicked. She laughed, which none of us had heard in months, and the whole hall turned round to look.

Later I found Tomas on the step with empty hands, pretending he hadn't minded. I told him the ribbon was up, gold to red, the way Mrs Pryce wanted. He said that was fine. Above us the bunting shivered in the wind off the tip, and somewhere in the hall a small click went on and on, as if the ball were still choosing.
