Ganesha tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha sits on the forearm, with its trunk curling into a spiral. A bold black outline wraps around the figure in swirling shapes, and the face and body are filled with soft grey shading. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a plain skin background.

Someone had wedged a grain tin into the lock mechanism years ago, and the rust had grown around it like bark around wire. Nobody on the ring could say who had put it there. The ledgers only said that every petition for repair had been filed under the word obstacle.

You kneel on the cold deck with the old cutting kit and a sheet of the station's oldest schematic, the one with an elephant's head drawn in the margin, its trunk coiled into a spiral that the archivists insisted was a sign of patience, not decoration. Your hands know the work before your mind does. You loosen the rim, feed the curl of the trunk into the gap, and lean. The hatch gives a sound like a held breath let out.
Behind it there is no store of grain but a corridor of seedlings in tin trays, pale and stubborn, pushing toward a lamp that someone left burning for a century. The engineers will call it a salvage error. You will call it the first thing in years that has been allowed to grow. You close the hatch gently, leave the tin where it lies on the deck, and begin the long report, starting with the word cleared.
