Four tribal sea turtles on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Four sea turtles are tattooed on the lower leg, with a small separate black mark above them to the left. The turtles are drawn in bold tribal-style linework with swirling curls and solid black areas, and three have hibiscus flowers within their shells. The ink is entirely black, and the turtles are arranged in a loose diagonal across the calf against a dark background.

The tide had turned before the kettle boiled, so Nan sent the boys down to the slipway with the lantern and told them not to come home until they had counted four shells going out past the rocks. Nobody on Ferrin Bay believed the old turtles still rose from the south so late in the year. Still, the eldest had been seen off Scarrow Point for a week, a red flower pinned in the whorls of her back like a brooch, and Nan had decided that meant something.

The boys waited while the light went copper and then grey. Out on the swell the turtles came up one at a time, slow as church bells, and each one cut the water into curling lines, the same loops and hooks Nan scratched into the bread dough every Sunday for luck. The youngest kept dipping under as though the sea wanted her back. The eldest turned once, fixed the boys with an eye like a wet pebble, and let something slide off her shell onto the slate.

Ruan reached it first. It was not a flower at all but a hibiscus cut from card that Nan had painted red and tied to the mooring ring as a joke, and the eldest had only been pretending to carry it. Ruan looked at the wet paper, then at the four dark shapes sliding back out past the rocks, and he understood that the joke had been on the sea all along.

When they got home, Nan was already pinning a fresh card to the door. She asked whether they had counted four. Ruan said they had counted five, and Nan only nodded and hung the lantern back on its hook.
