Treble clef with music notes and scrollwork
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A large treble clef is formed from ornate acanthus-style scrollwork, with a staff of lines and several music notes rising from its upper curl. The linework is bold and the scrollwork is shaded in soft greys, with darker areas giving depth. The design fills the frame vertically on a limb with plain skin and dark fabric at the edge.

Every spring the carriers who crossed the Harrow Pass heard the bell-maker's daughter before they saw her. She sat on the flat stone above the switchbacks and sang the notes her father had taught her, and the wind caught them and carried them down the scree like handfuls of thrown seed.

Her father had carved a sign into the lintel of their hut, a long curl that began as a ram's horn and ended in a knot of leaves. He said it was the shape the air made when a voice went up and came back. Nobody in the valley believed him, but carriers lost in the mist would follow the sound, so the girl kept singing, and the mist kept lifting.
One autumn a surveyor came up from the lowland towns with a brass case and a notebook full of sums. He wanted to bore a tunnel under the pass, and he said a singing girl on the stone would stop the work, because the miners would stop to listen. He offered her coin. She offered him a song. He did not want that, so he sent men to shift her stone.
The men found the stone was not heavy. It rolled aside like a loaf, and beneath it lay a shelf of pale rock marked with five lines, and small black dots hanging from them like fruit. When the surveyor laid his hand on the marks, the wind rose and every note in the valley sounded at once, and he sat down in the snow and could not stand until the girl began to hum, very low, the first note of the scale.
The tunnel was never bored. The surveyor's notebook, they say, still hangs on a nail in the hut with its sums gone blank, and the carriers hum as they cross the pass, and the mist lifts for them.
