Nine forms sat squared on the counter at Sallow Ferry Terminal, and the stamp had jammed again. Orla Pennick rubbed the rubber pad against her cardigan sleeve and tried once more, but the ink came up grey and blotchy. Across the counter an old man waited with a cardboard folder under his arm, its corners soft from handling. When she held out her hand for his papers, he opened the folder instead and showed her a rubbing of a god with an elephant's head, many arms spread like the spokes of a wheel, seated on a lotus whose petals had been inked one by one.

"My mother drew it for every doorway she ever walked through," he said. "He is the one you call before a journey. He moves what is in the road." Orla said the system had no such provision, only the form for lost or damaged documents, and he smiled as if she had told him the weather. "The system has plenty of obstacles of its own," he said. "Perhaps he has a quarrel with it."
She found a biro under a tray of paperclips and went over the faded entry box with it, following the hatch marks the way a child traces a map. Behind her the queue shuffled and someone sighed loudly about the wind. The old man didn't fidget. He watched her pen move across the form as though it were a small, careful ritual, and when she finally pressed the working stamp down on the margin, the ink came up black and clean.
He took his papers and tucked the folder back under his arm. At the door he stopped, looked back at the counter, and nodded at the margin where the stamp sat beside a tiny circle she had drawn without quite meaning to, a ring of dots and petals. Orla waved the next traveller forward and kept the pen in her hand. Her ledger had no room left, so she drew one more circle on the back of her own wrist, just to see it there.
