Norse hammer with beast heads and knotwork

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a symmetrical hammer design with a central face-like figure, runes along the top and interlaced knotwork running down the shaft. Beast heads with open jaws sit on either side of the head, and smaller animal figures and a spiral roundel decorate the base. The work is rendered in bold black and white with dense hatching, and the composition is centred on a plain background.

Sigrun swore the iron was sulking. Three nights we had drawn the bar out of the forge and let it cool, and three nights it came out with the grain running crooked, like a field ploughed by a drunk man. On the fourth, my uncle Halvard pressed the wax mould flat on the bench with his thumb and told me to stop fidgeting with the tongs before I dropped them in the slack tub.

The beasts were the hard part. He would not cast them whole. He cut the jaws from an offcut of good bloom, then wound the knotwork along each neck by hand, one loop passing under the next so that a man looking close would lose the thread and find it again. "Every knot is a road," he said, "and a road that doubles back is the only one that brings you home." I did not believe him. I was seventeen and my hands smelled of coal.

The hammer went into the water at the turn of the tide, when the fjord was black and the gulls had not yet started. The hiss rose off it like breath. Halvard lifted it out with the tongs, turned it to the grey light coming over the ridge, and laid it on the anvil. Two of the runes on the cheek of the head had cracked. He ran his thumb across them and laughed, which he rarely did.

"Thunder never arrives polished," he said, and handed me the file. "You smooth what you can. The rest you leave to the weather."
