Gas mask and skull sleeve on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm sleeve tattoo with a large gas mask at the centre, a skull below it, and a red and white spiral behind at the top. The shading is detailed and realistic, with smooth grey tones and dark outlines. Red accents appear on the spiral and parts of the skull, and the background is dark.

The spiral on the wall of the Brickyard Co-op had been painted over three times, and every time the red bled back through the grey like a bruise coming up. Tamsin Roe stood beneath it with the ration tally on a clipboard and counted the masks again. Eleven filters left. Her brother Callum had gone down to the old chemical works for pumps, the way he always did when the lists ran short. He took the spare mask from the hook by the door, the one with the cracked eyepiece, and told her he'd be back before the kettle boiled. The kettle boiled twice. She learned the difference between waiting and listening that afternoon, sitting on an upturned crate with one hand on the radio and a bicycle wheel rusting against the wall beside her.
At dusk the radio crackled. It was not Callum. It was a girl's voice from the east bank, reading out coordinates in a flat, careful monotone, and then, after a long hiss, the words Tamsin had been dreading and half hoping for: 'Pumps are on the lorry. He says to tell you the red door is open.' She looked up at the spiral. The red door was the sluice gate the old men had painted with a target so the scrap crews would know which way the water ran. Nobody had opened it in twenty years.
She took the last clean filter, fitted it to the mask on the hook, and went out into the grey to find out what her brother had decided was worth the dark. Behind her the kettle began to sing, and she let it.
