Skulls and a sombrero figure on a lower leg
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the calf and shows a figure in a wide-brimmed sombrero above a bullet bandolier, with a large numeral 8 shape in the centre. Below, a woman with a skull-patterned face and a skull at the base are rendered with soft shading and fine detail. The work is entirely in black and grey, with cracked, broken-wall textures around the top edge.

Mariana, the north wall of the chapel came down after the August storms, and behind a loose adobe I found the tin box you hid there the spring you left. Your letter is still folded inside, unopened, though I know what it says because you always wrote the same thing. The eight painted on the gate has faded to grey now. Papa would have repainted it by now, but he would have said the number was never for luck anyway.

The sombrero hung on the peg by the door for eleven years. I took it down the morning the Dolan boys rode up asking about the cattle, and I told them nothing, which is what you would have wanted. The bandolier you wore to the fiesta has gone green at the brass, and the cartridges rattle when I shake it. I do that most nights just to hear something other than wind through the broken roof.
The women from the market came again for the feast of the dead, painting their faces white and black, and one of them had an eye drawn across her forehead exactly like the one you laughed at on the cantina wall. She asked if I wanted my name painted on my cheek. I told her the wall already had a name on it, and she laughed and painted a skull on my hand instead.
Teodoro is taking the box to the station on Thursday. Do not write back to the chapel. Write to him, and tell him what you want done with the hat, because I have decided I will not be the one to bury it.
