Halfway along the last tram of the night, Ada Penrose noticed that the conductor had her brother's hands. Not his face, which the same overtime had worn thin on both of them, but the hands: one resting on the ticket machine, the ring finger still bent crooked from a cricket ball in 1997. She had known those knuckles since before she could count them, and still it took her three stops to understand they were not on the wrong side of the glass.

Ned had texted at midnight. Swap? Your shift, my shift, nobody checks the rota at Hollins Road. Ada had typed no and then deleted it, because they had done this at seven and at fourteen and once at their own mother's funeral, when one of them had stood at the graveside while the other sat in a stranger's kitchen eating biscuits. Each time someone had been fooled, and each time the fooling had felt like a small theft that the city took its cut from.

The tram rattled under the railway arch. Beyond the gasworks a crescent moon hung low, and beneath it a single star, sharp as a pin, seemed to drop a few sparks onto the wet road. Ada pulled the emergency cord she had not meant to touch, and the car shuddered to a stop in a puddle of orange light. The conductor turned. The face was not Ned's at all. It was her own, pressed to the window from the outside, reflected and not reflected at once.

She stepped down and let the doors close on the other one. Behind her the tram rolled on without a driver, its destination board blinking TERMINUS into the empty street. Ned's message arrived a minute later: Did you do it? Ada typed nothing. She walked under the moon, and the star walked a little behind her, the way the smaller one always does.
