The brazier in the scriptorium has been lit every night since before the abbot's grandfather was born, and tonight it is your turn to feed it. Brother Anselm taught you to lay the charcoal the way he laid his ink, thin and patient, so the heat climbs rather than leaps. You kneel on the cold flags with the bellows across your knees and snow ticking against the shutters, and you think about nothing but the draught.

Somewhere past vespers the wind finds the gap under the north door. The flame bends away from it, then tips over, then stands up again in a long black tongue that curls back on itself the way a wave does before it breaks. You have seen that shape a hundred times in the margins of the psalter, where Anselm drew it for the capitals. Tonight it looks less like ornament and more like a warning. The coals go grey at their edges, and your hand is shaking on the bellows.

You do not wake anyone. Instead you take the last dry taper from the box, the one wrapped in a scrap of spoiled vellum, and hold it to the single red ember still breathing under the ash. It catches slowly, the way Anselm promised it would if you were patient. You feed it splinters from a cracked board off the old book chest, then a curl of birch bark, and the flame rises again, tapering to a point as fine as a pen stroke.

When the abbot comes down at matins he finds you asleep against the warm stone, ink on your cheek and the brazier glowing steady. He says nothing. He only nudges the bellows an inch closer to your hand, so that when you wake it is the first thing you see.
