Geometric anatomical heart on a finger

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small anatomical heart is tattooed on the side of a finger, with the upper section drawn in fine black linework showing the vessels and the lower section built from faceted, angular shapes. The ink is black and grey, with light shading giving the heart some depth against the skin. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with a patterned silver ring on the adjacent finger and a blurred background.

The crystal came down off the hill in a bucket of wet sacking, and my uncle Ewan swore at it the whole way along the shore road, because he said a stone that clean had no business being carried by a man with a bad knee.

He cut it on a wheel in the shed behind the post office, sitting with his back to the sea. Above the bench he had pinned a drawing torn from an old school anatomy book, a heart with the valves and vessels in pencil, and under it he had ruled a grid of faint squares. "Every face is a decision," he told me. "Get one wrong and the light goes dead."

The winter the ferry stopped, we ran out of paraffin and he cut by the window instead, and I held the lamp for him. He left the vessels alone, soft and crossing like roads on a map of the Hebrides. The lower half he broke into planes, tilted and sharp, until the whole stone caught the grey light and threw it back at us in pieces.

When the boat came back in spring, a woman from the mainland bought it for a sum that made Ewan go quiet. He gave me half in an envelope and kept the drawing. I found it years later folded in the tin where he kept the spare fuses, the corner gone, and a new line penciled across the bottom: one face left uncut, for whoever wants to carry the rest.
