Small black and grey rose on a finger
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose with a shaded bloom and a few leaves is tattooed on the side of one finger. The linework is clean and dark, and the petals are softened with grey shading to give depth. The rest of the hand is pale, with pink nails and a plastic sheet in the background, and the tattoo is placed near the centre of the frame.

The gull had taken the last of the bread before Ailsa could get the bolt across the byre door, so she went down to the shore wall with nothing in her hands but the ring. Her mother had told her the rose on Skerra grew only where the wind could not reach it, in the hollow behind the kelp store, and that anyone who wanted something back from the island had to leave something of their own in the soil first.

The rose was small and grey as slate, its bloom closed tight as a fist. Ailsa knelt in the wet and dug with a limpet shell until she found the root, thick as a thumb and pale as candle wax. She pressed the ring into the earth beside it and did not look at it again. Her brother Cal had gone out in the Nessa in October and not come back. The minister said the sea kept what it wanted, but the island had its own rules about who it kept.
When she stood up, the bloom had opened a little, its petals edged dark as if someone had gone over them with a pencil. A shadow lay across the leaves although the sky was clear. Ailsa heard her name called from the top of the path, first in her mother's voice and then in Cal's. She did not turn round. The old stories said the first voice you answer is the one that keeps you.
She walked home with her hands empty and the wind at her back. The next spring the hollow behind the kelp store was full of roses, each one grey at the edges, and the women of Skerra went there in the mornings with their shells and their small hard promises, and came back lighter.
