Diamond tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown close together, with a small outlined diamond tattoo on one finger, joined by a thin horizontal line that runs across the skin. The diamond has crisp linework and light grey shading on its facets. On the neighbouring finger sits a bold black striped band, drawn with dark ink and lighter gaps, forming a ring-like design. The palette is entirely black and grey against soft, neutral skin tones.

The stone went to Mr Pardoe's shop the week the Hollin seam shut, wrapped in a handkerchief that still smelt of Dad's tobacco. Mam said we'd buy it back by Christmas. We didn't. So when Ivy from the chapel said she knew a man in the next town who could draw anything in ink, I brought him the only picture of a diamond I had, cut from the back of a catalogue.

He worked in a back room above a chip shop, with the radio low on the cricket. He did the stone in one sitting, a single black line running out from it like a seam running through rock. Then he asked what I wanted on the other side, and I told him about the band Dad wore down the pit every morning, the one he'd blackened with soot and never once polished off. The man shaded the stripes wide and dark, with lighter gaps where the lamp would have caught them.
Dad didn't say a word when he saw them. He just turned his own hand over on the kitchen table beside mine and let the two marks sit together under the bulb. The real ring was still in Pardoe's window, or somewhere behind it, and neither of us mentioned it.
The line from the diamond runs across and stops short of the band, the way the seam stopped at the fault. I still touch it when the kettle takes too long. It's a poor sort of wealth, but nobody can pawn it.
