Geometric anatomical heart on the ribs

Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A faceted, geometric outline of a human heart with its main vessels at the top, drawn in uniform black line work. The lines are solid with no shading, and the tattoo sits against pale skin on the side of the ribs, with a dark garment across the top of the frame. The photograph is black and white, so the tattoo appears as pure black ink.

The cartographer's wife had drawn the map of the seam herself, in ink on the back of a feed sack, because the company surveyor would not come up the valley in the snow. Old Tomas pinned it above the range and checked it each morning against the crack in the chimney breast, the way other men checked the weather. Every line on it was a tunnel, every corner a place where the rock had once shifted and might shift again.

His daughter Edda worked the coal face now, at nineteen, with a lamp on her cap and a tin of barley bread in her pocket. She said the map was wrong about the eastern gallery. She said the roof there rang like a struck pan, and the old drawings had the water running the wrong way. Tomas told her the map had been right for thirty years. She told him that was not the same thing as being right about today.

The night the eastern gallery came down, they had been arguing about that very point across the kitchen table, and she had gone out to the pit head to prove it with a candle and a bent nail. The men who dug her out found the nail still in her fist, its point turned toward the wall where the old lines ran.

In spring Tomas took the feed sack down, turned it over, and sat with it until the light went. Then he went to the eastern wall and marked a new corner in charcoal, the way she had shown him, and drew a short straight line from it to the edge of the page. The water, he wrote beside it, runs the right way.
