Anatomical heart with red triangle on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A shaded anatomical heart with visible vessels and chambers sits on the side of the ribs, with small red arrows radiating from its top. A thin red triangle, point down, frames the lower half of the heart. The heart is rendered in grey tones with soft shading, while the triangle and arrows are in flat red linework, and a small tattoo is visible on one finger.

The woodcutter Ansel Mott had a habit of talking to the oaks before he felled them, and the village of Hollin Cross thought him soft for it. When the old beech above the mill came down in the February gale, he found something wedged in its heart: a hollow the size of a fist, lined with grey wax, and inside it a heart carved from yew that someone had left to darken.

He carried it down to Widow Parrish, who kept the bees and knew what was owed to the forest. She turned it over in her hands and said a girl had put it there, long ago, asking the wood to keep her secret, and the wood had kept it for forty winters. Someone had bound red thread around its base in a triangle, point down, to hold it steady. "Things that want to leave need a weight," she said. "Things that want to stay need a point to rest on."
Ansel asked what the little red marks meant, the arrows pricked out from the top of the heart, pointing every which way. The widow laughed and said they were the girl's thoughts, sent out over the fields one at a time, and every one that reached the village had brought somebody home. He took the heart back to the beech stump, set it in the hollow again, and pressed a flat stone on top.
Next morning the path to the mill was swept clean and a loaf sat on his step, still warm. He never learned who had come back that year, only that the stump put out a green shoot in spring, and the shoot leaned towards the village like a finger pointing the way home.
