Anatomical heart tattoo in engraving style

Other · Mixed · Photo

A large anatomical heart is shown in black linework with fine hatching and stippling, with a second heart outlined in red behind it, offset to the upper right. The vintage diagram lettering, including the caption Fig 37 and letter labels with dotted leader lines, sits around the design. The black shading gives the heart depth and the red ink is used for flat outlines and hatching, against a lightly lit skin background.

Ada Lindqvist kept her hands flat on the counter and counted the seconds. Behind her the crate sat open, forty-one plates packed in straw, each one cut in her father's cellar in Sheffield, every artery bitten deep enough to hold ink for a century.

What is it, he asked. Fig 37, she said. The great vessels and the chambers, lettered so the students could follow the text. He ran a thumb along the dotted lines that led from the letters to the thick black muscle, then stopped at the B, which had been cut slightly crooked. Why is there a second one behind, in red? Veins, she said. My father inked the return journey in red, so the blood could be seen coming home while the rest of the body was busy forgetting it.

He was quiet for a while. Then he asked about the B, and she told him her father had cut that label himself the winter before he died, had never been able to straighten the slant, and that she had never wanted him to. The officer nodded, pressed his stamp to the manifest and slid it back across the counter. She lifted the crate onto her hip. Through the gap in the straw the red outline caught the lamp, and for a moment the second heart looked as though it had crossed the frontier ahead of her, already knowing the way home.
