Geometric and botanical back tattoo

A woman with short blonde hair, photographed from behind, shows a symmetrical tattoo centred between her shoulder blades. The design combines a diamond-shaped geometric motif with sprigs of leaves, small buds, a dangling drop element and a fine spiky top. The tattoo is rendered in black ink with fine lines and small dots, against warm skin in a softly lit, dim interior.

The lens has to be polished before the fog comes in, and your father is not a man who waits for weather to tell him what to do. He hands you the chamois and the tin of rouge without looking up from the ledger. In the lantern room the glass prisms stand in their brass rings like a cut crown, each facet catching the grey light off the water and throwing it back in small diamonds across your sleeves.

Outside the gallery rail the cliff holds on to what it can. Sea kale grows in the cracks, and thrift, and a stubborn purple vetch that has no business surviving the wind. You ask why anyone would plant where nothing keeps. He says the birds nest in it, and the birds are the reason the light is needed at all. Then he tells you to mind the wick, because the wick is the only honest part of the business: it either burns clean or it smokes.
The night the boat from Skerry Bay fails to come in, you climb the iron stairs with the oil can and a spare mantle. Your hands shake and you hate that they do. At the top the lens is already turning on its bearing with a slow clockwork hum, and you raise the flame to its brightest. The beam leaves the glass in one column and the prisms split it into pale diamonds that fall across the swell like a crown tossed out to sea.
Far out, a small light answers, then another. You stand at the rail until your fingers stop shaking. Below, your father is counting the boats aloud the way he always does, and for once he does not stop at the number he expected.
