Black and grey roses across shoulder and upper arm
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large open roses with smaller flowers, buds and leaves, arranged in a sweeping cluster that runs from the shoulder down the upper arm. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading built up through layered tones to give the petals depth and volume. The design is entirely black and grey and sits against bare skin and a black strap top, with the subject's face out of frame.

Marta kept the flower stall at the bottom of the fish market in Carrowby, where the rain came sideways off the harbour from October to April. Her roses were never coloured. She grew them from cuttings taken off the old chapel wall, where nothing had bloomed in colour for as long as anyone could say, and they came up the grey-black of wet slate, with petals folded tight as letters.

A widower called Tobias came every Thursday and asked for a rose that would not fade. Marta told him she had none that would not fade, and he said everyone had one, and he waited with his cap in his hands until she went to the back of the stall. She cut him two roses that had opened in the rain, one set behind the other, and a scatter of small white flowers to go at their feet, with buds still closed up tight. He paid her in brass buttons, which she accepted because he had none of coin left.
The roses lasted. They lasted through the flood that took the fish stalls, through the frost that split the chapel wall, and through the winter Marta's own hands went stiff and she could no longer make a clean cut. When spring came and the market opened again, Tobias was not there on Thursday, nor the Thursday after. The stall-holder beside her said he had gone up the hill road with his roses in a tin, and had asked that the bloom be left unpicked.
That evening Marta pulled her shawl tight and walked up the hill herself. The rain had stopped. On the chapel wall a single rose had opened in the dusk, dark as ink at the heart and pale at the rim, and a bud beside it had not yet decided.
