Geometric armband tattoo on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black armband tattoo wraps around the forearm just below the elbow. It has two thin bands with triangular zigzag edges framing a central panel of interlocking chevron and angular geometric shapes. The ink is crisp and bold with even black lines, set against warm skin and a dark grey top with a glimpse of red fabric behind.

The chevrons refused to close. Brother Anselm had pricked out the first course of the lintel pattern at dawn, using the dividers his predecessor had left in a cracked leather roll, and by the third row the zigzag edges were drifting a finger's breadth out of true. He scraped the lime back with his thumb and began again, counting the triangles under his breath the way the novices counted psalms.

The old band on the cloister arch was the only reference left. Brother Cuthbert had sketched it in a notebook before the fire took the scriptorium roof, and his drawing showed the same interlocking angles, but the margin said only: twelve turns, then leave one open. Anselm thought it was a mason's joke, or a penance. He spent the afternoon measuring the arch with a knotted cord, marking every step along the eastern walk, and found that the chevrons turned twelve times exactly in its length.
On the ninth day the rain stopped, and the abbot came down from the choir carrying a lamp, though it was not yet dark. He stood at the bench and watched Anselm ink the last course, the black lines thick and even against the wet white plaster. "You have closed it," the abbot said. "No," said Anselm. "Cuthbert was right. I have left the last one open, so the band can run on past the wall."
He pressed a thumb to the open triangle, still tacky, and felt the cool grain of the stone beneath it, waiting for the next course.
