Two roses and leaves on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two full-blown roses with a small bud and several leaves, arranged in a vertical cluster that runs from the forearm towards the wrist. The petals and foliage are built up with fine cross-hatched and stippled linework, giving an engraved, vintage botanical look with soft grey shading. The design is shown in black ink against pale skin, with a dark striped fabric behind the arm and a blurred background.

Dear Ada, the second bush came through the gale, though I'll grant it came through with its head bowed like a clerk. I have pegged both stems to the iron railing with strips of your old petticoat, because Mr Fenwick says the wind off the Skerry takes anything that isn't nailed down, and roses, it seems, count as loose.

The keeper's boy has been sketching them for me in the back of the ledger. He draws in the stiff engraver's manner he learned from the almanac, every petal a little curl of ink, every leaf veined like a map of the river. Yesterday he brought me a bud so carefully drawn that I could not tell whether it was the one on the bush or the one on the page. I told him that was the trick of it, that a good drawing and a good rose both want you to stop looking and simply be glad.
The lamp was lit at dusk as usual and I climbed the hundred and four steps to trim the wick. From the gallery I could see the cove, the gulls, and the two roses below me, bronze in the first swing of the beam. It struck me that I have spent eleven winters keeping a flame alive for ships that never once stopped to ask my name. Let them have their charts. I have my roses.
Come in June, when the cluster will be in full bloom and the fog has lifted. I'll leave the door unlatched and the kettle on.
Yours in salt and thorns, Margaret
