Geometric bee in a dotwork circle on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised bee with a yellow and orange head, red and black striped abdomen, and large faceted purple wings, with black outlines around its legs and body. It sits inside a circular background of fine black dotwork and interlocking geometric lines. Bold colour dominates the bee while the black background is smooth and evenly inked, and the bee is centred in the frame against a plain blue-grey wall.

Nell had already lost two hives to the damp when the swarm came over the curtain wall at noon, a loud brown cloud that settled on the broken arch of the chapel like a dropped hat. Her grandmother would have called it a sign. Nell called it a nuisance and went for the smoker.

The castle had been a ruin for three hundred years, but the bees had never stopped keeping house in it. Every summer they nested in the thick stone behind the old garderobe, and every summer somebody from the village came up the track to ask for them to be moved. Nell's grandmother had always said the bees knew the castle's bones better than the surveyors did, and that you did not drive out a colony that had survived a siege and two floods.

The swarm would not go into the box. It clustered on a hawthorn at the foot of the keep, thick as a fist, humming in a note that made her teeth ache. Nell stood with the empty skep in her arms for a long time, watching the light shift on the gold of the queen's cluster. Then she set the skep down, sat on the cold step, and waited. Bees, her grandmother said, will always go where the good comb is.

By dusk they had moved. They had gone up through a gap in the masonry where the old bell had hung, and the wall was humming like a struck glass. Nell left the skep where it was, pulled her coat tight, and walked home without looking back, carrying only the smoker. In the morning the castle was quiet, and she found a single purple-winged bee asleep on the window ledge of her kitchen, as if it had followed her down the track to see whether she would come back.
