Geometric beetle drawing with crystal shapes and dotwork shading, inked on a tan leather panel.

Geometric beetle design on leather

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised beetle sits centrally, its body divided into faceted planes and striped linework, with dotted stippling on the head and wing cases. Angular crystal forms radiate behind it and frame the insect within a pointed, chevron-shaped base. The drawing is in black ink on a pale tan leather surface, photographed straight on with no body part visible.

The notebook came in at ten past three, pushed under the hatch of the pawn counter with a ticket for a bicycle pump. Its cover was pale tan leather, stiff at the corners, and someone had inked a beetle on it so carefully that I forgot to be cross about the hour. Its back was cut into planes like old glass, and the crystals behind it seemed to push up out of the page the way the office blocks on Arundel Gate push up out of the rain.

I have a rule for the small hours. Nothing gets valued before dawn, because a man who has been awake since Tuesday will sell you his mother's clock for the price of a kebab. So I turned the notebook over by feel. The wing cases were striped like water running down a window, and the stippling on the head thickened into shadow where the light would have pooled. The tube light over the shelter across the road has been failing since August, and it flickered on the leather as if the beetle were breathing.

The ticket was in the name of a Mr Ferris Abbott, who had not collected anything in eleven years. Inside the cover was a list in biro: Rent. Bus fare. Ring Lou. Under it, in a neater hand, someone had written and crossed out Walk the beetle home. I sat with that for a while, the way you sit with a song you half remember.

At half five the windows of the bookies opposite turned grey, then a thin gold. I stamped the ticket with the date, wrote Keep in the box and put the notebook on the shelf by the till, face up, so the beetle could see the street when it woke.
