Symmetrical owl design
Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing owl with ear tufts, wide staring eyes and a small beak, drawn as a symmetrical design. The linework is bold solid black with white inlines, using scale patterns across the chest and wing-like stripes running down the body. The image is monochrome on a plain pale grey background, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

The fiddler would not start until the owl had settled on the rafters, and everyone in Hollin Cross knew it. Old Mrs Ferrier said the bird had been there since the hall was roofed, watching the floor with two round eyes that never blinked, and that a dance was only a dance if the owl approved of the step.

The year the miller's son came back from the coast, he laughed at this. He danced with the schoolmistress through the first set, then with the blacksmith's girl, then with the widow who had buried two husbands and didn't care what the owl thought. When the fiddle stopped he walked to the middle of the boards and looked straight up. 'You can keep your watching,' he said.
Nobody saw the owl leave. The lamps guttered and the floor went quiet, and when the miller's son turned to go he found his boots would not lift from the boards. The fiddler played one slow tune, the same one over and over, and feathers came down soft as ash. Each one that touched the floor became a scale of dark wood, a stripe of shadow, until the boy stood still among the dancers and they stepped around him as if he were a post.
Hollin Cross still dances on Saturdays. If you arrive late you will see a black bird on the beam above the door, very still, its eyes wide and bright. Mrs Ferrier's grandchildren say to bow to it on the way in. Nobody ever asks what became of the miller's son, but the boards by the stage are darker there, in the shape of a man who was told to look up.
