Symmetrical beetle line drawing with stars
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A single beetle is drawn front-on and centred, with a bold black outline, detailed segmented shell, and branching antennae. Small four-pointed stars and dots are scattered around the body for decoration. The piece is rendered in solid black line on a pale grey textured background, with no shading and no colour.

You find the beetle on the lane below Harrow Wood, lying on its back with its legs folded like a stranger's gloves, and because your grandmother taught you never to leave anything to die upside down, you turn it over with a hazel twig. It rights itself at once, as if it has been waiting for someone sensible to come along. Its shell is ridged in neat, matching bands, left side the same as right, and its antennae branch like frost on a window. Around it, in the dust, lie small bright marks, four-pointed, the kind you would swear were stars if stars ever came down to lanes.

You tell yourself you will leave it be. But the beetle keeps turning towards the village, towards the lit kitchen windows of Little Cadby, and when you step aside it steps after you, patient as a verger. So you fetch the biscuit tin from your satchel, the one with the faded robin, and it climbs in without fuss, carrying three of the stars on its back like coins for a ferryman.
At the lych gate the vicar's clock strikes nine and the tin grows warm in your hands. You lift the lid. Inside there is nothing but a scatter of dark and a small sound like someone counting under their breath, and then the beetle is gone up through the gap in the hedge, its shell throwing back the lamplight in two perfect halves.
You stand there a long while. Only one star is left, stuck to the pad of your thumb, and when you rub it, it does not come off. It hums a little, the way a kettle does before it sings, and you keep it there all the way home.
