Geometric bird in flight on the back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A stylised bird with outstretched wings is drawn in black ink across the skin. It is built from fine single-line outlines, overlapping circles and dotted stippling that give the wings and body a faceted, geometric look. The soft grey background of the skin and the bird's central placement keep the tattoo as the clear focus of the photograph.

Don't you touch that pot yet, boy. The stock has to sit until it stops arguing with itself. Pull that stool over where I can see your face, and you'll get the story of Mags Corran's dividers straight or not at all.

Mags was a draughtswoman in Hull who could not draw a bird to save her life, so she drew them with compasses instead. She put the point on the paper, swung a circle, then another, and kept swinging until the wings came out of the arithmetic. Every feather was a pinprick where two lines crossed, because she said a bird is only the places where two true things meet. She made one for her husband Eli, who was bound for the Baltic on a timber barque and kept fiddling with his chart like a man fiddling with a rosary.

The Baltic took him in February. There was ice on the rigging and the mate counted heads twice a watch. When the fog came down thick as wet wool, Eli laid his copy of her drawing on the binnacle and walked the dividers along the arcs, feeling each overlap with his thumb, reckoning the Sound by the measure she had set down in ink. He brought the ship in on a drawing.

When they got him home, the chart was rolled tight and pinned above my stove, and Mags had added one more bird in the bottom corner, wings wide and pointing out to sea. That's the sort of bird you draw when you want somebody to come back, boy. Now give that pot a stir before it catches.
