Hummingbird with swirling lines on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hummingbird in mid-flight, with its long beak, wings and tail drawn in fine black linework. The head and chest are shaded with stippled dots, while the wing feathers use lines of varying weight. Thin, looping flourish lines curve around the bird on a plain, pale skin background.

The radiator had boiled dry forty miles past the last petrol sign, and I was on my knees in the gravel with a tin of water and a dying torch, trying to read the hose clamp by the glare. Dad always said a desert road was just a conversation nobody had finished. I thought that was the sort of thing men said to fill a silence.

Then the hummingbird came. I hadn't expected them out here, so far from any flowers, but there it was, hanging in the shimmer above the split hose where the coolant had dripped and steamed. It held its wings so still I could hear them, a thin electric hum, and it dipped its long needle of a beak into the wet metal sheen the way you might sip from a cup someone had left out for you. Ten minutes, I think. I didn't move. Nothing about it suggested it wanted anything from me.
When the clamp finally bit and the engine ticked over, the bird lifted, looped once around the bonnet in a loose curl like someone tracing a signature in the air, and went off east over the saltbush. I watched until it was only a shake in the heat. I wrote nothing down, which Dad would have pointed out.
Eleven miles on I pulled into a town with one pump and a woman who ran it. I asked whether the hummingbirds came to the road often. She didn't look up from the till. She took my notes, gave me change, and said the birds went wherever there was water, which was not much of a thing to say about a place. I drove on with the windows down, listening for a hum that wasn't there.
