Phoenix wings and feathers across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large phoenix or bird with outstretched wings covers the upper back, its head turned to the right and its talons visible at the shoulder. Long feathers trail down the spine to the lower back, where several peacock-style eye feathers are drawn in fine detail. The tattoo uses black ink with grey shading for depth, and the bare back fills the frame against a dark background.

The heat off the Carrow road came up through the soles of my boots by nine in the morning, and by noon the lorries shimmered like things seen underwater. My uncle sold feathers from a trestle table outside Mersa Wells: ostrich plumes for the hat shops in town, grey goose quills, and, under a flap of oilcloth, the peacock eyes he would not let the children touch.

The stranger came in a dust-coloured Bedford with one bald tyre and asked for the bird. We thought he meant a hen for the pot. He meant the ash heap behind the petrol station, where, he said, something had burned itself to nothing three nights before and would stand up again by the next full moon if anyone was watching. Uncle laughed. I did not. I had seen the glow in the ash, a smear of orange like a coal under breath.
We walked out at dusk with a sack and a jar of water. The ash was warm as bread. Under it lay one long feather, scorched at the tip, and in the middle of the quill an eye opened, slow and gold, and looked at me the way the sun looks at a dry field before it decides to rain. I gave it the water. The feather drank it, and then it was no longer a feather but a wing unfolding over the sand, and the eyes ran down its trailing length like lamps being lit one by one along a road.
Uncle still sells feathers. He will not sell the peacock ones, and when the Bedford comes back through with its one bald tyre, the driver tips his hat to the oilcloth and says nothing. I keep the jar. It is always half full, and I have never once had to fill it.
