Geometric dotwork back piece with lotus

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a bun is seen from behind, showing a full back tattoo. The design combines hexagonal and dot-filled geometric panels on the shoulders and sides with a central mandala, stacked floral motifs and a lotus at the lower back. The work is in black and grey, with fine shading and dotwork creating depth across the skin.

Dear Tom,

The bees swarmed on Tuesday, the third time this year, and I had to stand in the middle of the orchard with a sheet over my head while they settled on the lilac like a dropped shawl. Mr Fenwick from the parish came round with his smoker and his opinions, and I let him hold the box while I did the work. He says a swarm is a sign of a house that is going to lose someone. I told him a house that loses nobody has never had a bee in it.

You'll remember the lotus pond. Father dug it the summer before the war and filled it with water from the rain butt, and it never once bloomed for him. It bloomed for me in the August after you left, a single pink cup opening at six in the morning, and I sat on the edge of the stone with my feet in the cold and didn't call anyone. The seed heads came after, dried and grey, with those holes in them like a colander, each hole a seed the size of a peppercorn. I have counted them. There are a hundred and twelve on the largest head, arranged in rings around a centre so neat you'd think a jeweller drew them.

I've enclosed a handful in the envelope. Don't plant them in that clay of yours in Kendal, they'll sulk. Put them in a jar on the windowsill and let the light come through. When you're tempted to ring me about the will, look at them instead. Every hole is a little promise of a plant that came before, and the bees, bless them, have already started building the next comb in the wall of the boiler house.

Come at the end of the month. The honey will be ready and I have something to show you that Father left under the greenhouse bench, wrapped in oilcloth. It is not what you think.

Love, Ada
