Geometric eagle head in black and grey
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised eagle head in profile faces left, with a sharp hooked beak, a detailed eye and feathers that sweep down into a long curved tail. The body is filled with fine triangular hatching and solid black areas, creating strong contrast between light and dark. The eagle sits within a tall rectangular frame on a pale, textured background.

The sign went up on the Tuesday before the Whitsun dance, when Dennis Quayle climbed the ladder with a tin of black enamel and a ruling pen he kept wrapped in chamois like a surgeon's blade. Nobody had asked for an eagle. The committee wanted the name repainted, THE PALAIS in gold letters, but Dennis said a name without a bird on it was just a door.

I held the ladder. From the floor it looked like nothing, scribbled blots and cross-hatching, but he worked the feathers out in lines so fine I couldn't count them, a thousand little triangles stacked like slates on a roof. Where the wing fell away into shadow he filled it solid, black as the coal cellar, and said the dark was doing half the work. 'Light needs somewhere to sit,' he said.
The bottom of the frame was where the trouble started. Mrs Pryce wanted a star. Dennis wanted a diamond, a small one, the shape a sequin makes when it drops off a dress and nobody notices until Monday. He let me paint it. My hand shook and the diamond came out lopsided, and he laughed and said it was the first honest thing anyone had put on that wall in thirty years.
That night the mirror ball turned and the eagle caught it in its eye, one white point of light sliding slowly round the room. Couples stopped under it without knowing why. I swept the floor until two, and every time I looked up it was watching the door, as if it had been told to keep an eye on whoever left last.
