Geometric fox on inner forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small fox is drawn from angular black facets with no shading, forming a faceted, origami-like outline of the animal in a seated pose. The fine, even lines are solid black on pale skin, and the tattoo sits near the wrist. The composition is close and cropped, with a grey sweater sleeve on the left and a pink and blue patterned backdrop on the right.

Dear Nell, the fox was back on the wall at the bottom of the allotment this morning, sitting up on its haunches as if someone had posted it there and forgotten to collect it. I watched it from the kitchen window with my tea going cold. You'd have laughed. It looked less like an animal than the paper one you folded for me the summer you were nine, all sharp creases and no softness anywhere.

I have been trying to remember how you did its tail. You turned the square over three times, pressing each fold with your thumbnail until the corners met like the hands of a clock at quarter past. My own always came out lopsided, so I gave up and let my foxes be whatever shape the wind left them in. The wood behind Hollin Lane has been cut back since you went, and the ground under the birches is bare where the diggers went through.

Yesterday I walked out past the last cottage to where the path bends into the trees. The fox was there, not the wall one but a real one, lying low in the bracken with its ears flat. It looked at me for a long moment, then stood and went off along the line of the stream in three neat, angular steps, the way a sheet of paper skids when you flick it across the table.

I've pinned your fox above the cooker where the steam can't reach it. Come up at Easter and fold me another. This time I'll watch your thumbs, and I promise I won't laugh at the tail. Love, Gran.
