Fine line rose on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose in delicate black linework sits on the inner forearm, with a bud, leaves and a long curving stem trailing down the arm. The petals are shaded with light hatching and grey wash, while the outlines are thin and even. A pale wall with a grid of panes, a wicker frame and a green succulent sit behind the arm, leaving the tattoo as the clear focus.

The nursery wanted the rose smaller, so Ada sat at the bench with the magnifier pushed up on her forehead and cut the bud down by a quarter of an inch. Tom watched from the stool by the sink, mixing grey wash in a saucer until it looked like rain on slate. 'Keep the hatching light,' she said. 'The petals have to look as though a breath could move them, not as though they've been pressed in a book.'

He tried twice on the scrap paper and got it wrong twice, the shadow pooling where it should have lifted. She took the brush from him without a word and showed him how to let the water do the work: one stroke, then nothing, then one more. The stem was the part she never let anyone else touch. It ran from the bud down past the leaves and off the bottom edge of the sheet, because a stem that stops at the edge of the paper has been cut, and she had no time for cut things.
The letter came on a Thursday from a woman in Hebden Bridge who wanted the original for a brass plate. Ada read it twice, then took the drawing out of the folder and held it to the window. The light came through the grid of panes and fell across the paper, and the stem seemed to run on past the glass and out into the yard where the old wall stood.
She wrapped the rose in tissue and wrote on the back: the stem continues. Then she posted it, and went back to the bench to draw a second one, longer.
