Sit down, you, and stop fiddling with that ticket. The milk train was late that morning, so the whole of Ashby Road stood shivering on the platform when the goods wagon door slid back and a head came out. A long neck, ears like folded paper, and a coat cut into shards of rose and tangerine and bruised violet, every piece speckled as if someone had dusted it with sugar. Nobody spoke. Mr Pell, the stationmaster, took off his cap and put it back on the wrong way round.

She had come from a fair that went bust in Leeds, and the showman had sold her for the price of a return ticket. Pell said she could not use the platform, for the canopy was too low for her horns, so she stood on the cinders with her great eyes half shut. The children brought her carrots and the baker brought day-old buns, and for a week the signals were pulled by hand while the whole line waited on one animal's good opinion.

On the eighth morning the frost broke. Pell came down with his lamp and found the track empty and the wagon door wide. She had climbed the hill to the old quarry, where the stone was cut in angles, and there she stood among the broken faces of the rock, turning her head so every facet caught the sun at once. Pell said afterwards he had never seen so many colours on one thing that was not a bird.

So when the milk train runs late now, the porters still hold their lamps up to the cutting and look for her. She is not there, of course. But look at the light on the stone, pink and blue and speckled, and you will see her. Now drink up your cocoa and go home, before the next train comes through and the gap takes you.
