Watercolour owl on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bird, apparently an owl, is shown face-on with a rounded head, large eye and feather-like marks along the body. Loose black linework is overlaid on soft washes of purple, blue, orange, pink and yellow that bleed beyond the outline. The colour is applied freely across the skin, leaving the figure partly defined and partly dissolving into the background.

Sit closer, the wind up here takes half of what I say. You want the owl of Hollin Gap? Then mind the fire. Every grandmother on this pass knew the owl who lived in the rock above the Cold Stile, and by daylight she was no colour at all. Only at dusk did she wake and go walking through the drifts with a paintbox tucked under one wing.

The shepherds' children swore she was grey as ash until the sun went down. Then she dipped her feathers in whatever the sky had spilled that evening: violet from the far ridge, orange where the sun had split on the scree, a pink that tasted of rosehip, a yellow like the light in a kitchen window. She brushed it over herself with her great unblinking eye, and it ran off her in rivers, down the slopes and into the becks, so the valley below was painted every morning by an owl who never once kept inside her own outline.
One winter a girl named Nessa Pardoe climbed up to ask her for the blue. Her brother had gone out over the ice and the cloud had come down thick as wool. The owl said nothing. She only lifted her wing and let the blue run out of it onto the snow, and the girl followed it, dot by dot, for three miles until the lamps of the lower farm came through the murk.
Nessa's brother came home that spring, and every March since, the first blue has run down the pass before anyone else is awake. Nobody has seen the owl in full daylight. Go on, take your cup. If you look at the rocks at dusk, you will see she has not quite finished, and that a few of her edges are still wet.
