Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo
A fox is shown in a faceted, geometric style, built from angular panels of orange, grey, purple and dark tones. Blue watercolour-style splashes and a trailing blue tail sweep around the figure, and the fox is shown in a seated, three-quarter pose. The colour is bold and saturated, with smooth shading between facets.

The fox came up Mill Lane the morning after the flood with a pane of blue glass held in its jaws, carrying it the way a verger carries the collection plate. Oswin Pell watched it from his workshop doorway with a bead of solder still cooling on his thumb. He had cut that pane himself three weeks before, for the chapel window at Haddon Lowe, and it had gone missing from the cart the night the Ayle came over the causeway.

The fox stopped at his step and sat, turning its head so that one grey eye caught the light while the other went to the shadows. Its coat was all angles, the orange broken into panels like a cut stone, with slate and violet shading where the planes met. Oswin had never seen an animal so exactly made. He held out his hand, palm up, the way his father had taught him to offer a sheet of crown glass to a customer who did not trust it.
The fox set the pane down on the cobbles. It did not break. Instead it lifted one forefoot and tapped the glass once, and the whole sheet shattered into a hundred shards that rang like a struck bell. Before he could curse, the fox had taken one sliver the size of a thumbnail and was off down the lane, its tail trailing a streak of wet blue that spattered the stones like paint flicked from a brush.
That evening Oswin walked the causeway with a broom and a bucket. The river had fallen and left the reeds dripping, and every one of them wore a small blue spot, as though something had been shaken loose over the water. He swept the shards into his apron and counted them twice. He came up one short. Out on the far bank a fox-shaped shadow was picking its way through the sedge, and where it passed the water kept a faint blue shine, like glass held up to a window.
