Black linework geometric tattoo of parallel lines, zigzags and crosses running down a bare arm in front of a red brick wall, in a geometric style on the forearm and upper arm.

Geometric linework sleeve on an upper arm and forearm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the outer arm from the upper arm down towards the forearm, built from long parallel lines with zigzag chevrons, small cross marks and arrow-like shapes. The linework is crisp, even and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The arm is photographed against a red brick wall, with a dark blue top visible at the shoulder and side.

Dear Tom,

The path past Hollin Bottom has gone again, so I have been out with the tin of red paint and the hatchet every morning this week. You will laugh, but I have started marking it the old way, the way Granny Ewing showed me when I was small. Two long lines running up the trunk like the rails of a bridge, a zigzag between them for the rain, and a row of little crosses along the edge for the ones who cannot read. Where the path turns, an arrow pointing home.

Yesterday I got to the stile above the mill race and found someone had scratched over my marks. Not cut them out, just crossed them through with a single stroke, as if correcting a sum. I stood there a long while with my hand on the bark. Then I looked up and saw that the marks ran on past the stile, higher than I had ever gone, into the beech wood where nobody from the village goes any more. Every chevron was fresh. Whoever it was had been walking ahead of me all along.

I did not follow them. I came back down and mended the stile instead. But last night I dreamt of those lines climbing the trunks and over the ridge like rails pulled taut across the hill, and this morning there was a fresh arrow on our gatepost that I did not make.

I'll bring the paint on Sunday. Keep the kettle on.

Yours, Nell
