Wand, snake and Deathly Hallows forearm set

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm shows a set of small black tattoos, including a wand, a snake wrapped around a skull, two Deathly Hallows triangle and circle symbols, the number 9 3/4 and the word Lumos in script. The linework is fine and clean, with the snake shaded in grey tones and the other motifs in solid black outline. The image is a plain light grey backdrop with the arm held up and the hand relaxed at the bottom, and the tattoos appear to be temporary designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp on the far end of Carrow Halt went dark again on Tuesday, and I was the one sent up the ladder to coax it back. Mr Pell, who has run the signal box for thirty-one years, says it is the damp. I say it is the cheap oil the company buys from a man in Bristol who has never once seen a lamp. Either way the parish office will want an account by Friday, so I am writing it down here where I can think.

The old porter's trunk came in with the Whitsun goods. It had a brass plate reading Dr A. Vane, Physician, and inside, under a moth-eaten wool blanket, lay three things I had never seen before: a hazel rod as long as my forearm, worn pale at the grip; a ring of plain iron with a flat grey stone set in it; and a small silver box shaped like a folded cloak. Nothing rattled. Everything hummed faintly when I held it near the lamp.

Mr Pell would not let me touch the rod. He said his mother kept a walking stick with a carved snake coiled round a skull for its knob, and that every house on the line has a dead thing in the cupboard. He took the ring instead, turned it three times between finger and thumb, and put it back in the trunk with the stone facing down. The lamp came on at once. Then the number board above platform two, which has read 9 for as long as I have been here, showed a quarter beyond it, flickering in and out like a bad bulb.

I have sent the trunk to the lost property office in Exeter with a note saying the owner's name is on the lid. Tonight the lamp is burning steady and I have not climbed the ladder once. I keep thinking about the stone, how it caught the light and gave nothing back, and how clean the lines were, as if someone had drawn each edge twice to be certain.
