Geometric lotus-style design drawing
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical, symmetrical design drawn in black ink on a cream background. A pointed teardrop shape sits at the top, above a layered, lotus-like central form built from fine lines, and a dotted stipple fills the lower petal shapes, ending in a thin spike. The linework is crisp and the image is evenly lit with plenty of open space around the motif.

The bell jar was the first thing I broke that winter, and Mr Okonedo never let me forget it. He said a jeweller's apprentice who cannot respect glass will never respect a balance, and so for six weeks I swept up filings and learned to hold a hair-thin needle without flinching. The workshop above the Pavilion Arcade in Leeds smelt of hot brass and pumice, and the light came in grey and even through the north window, which is why he insisted we work there and nowhere else.

We were commissioned that spring to make a pendant for a widow in Harrogate, a thing with no gemstone, only her late husband's instructions written in a careful hand. Draw it as a lotus, he had said, but stripped down until it is only the bones of one. Every petal a sharpened line, every seed a dot pressed with a point so fine you could lose it in a fingerprint. I drew it forty times. Mr Okonedo tore up thirty-nine.
The fortieth he kept. He held it against the window and said nothing for so long that I began to cover my mistakes in my head. Then he tapped the tip at the top, the teardrop that hangs above everything, and said, that is where she is looking from. I did not understand him until we set the final spike at the bottom, a thin needle of silver that points down into nothing, and he told me that every good piece needs one thing that reaches past the frame. The widow collected it on a Tuesday. She did not open the box in our shop. She carried it out like a candle in a draught.
