The keeper's daughter, Morwen Tallis, had carried the oil cans up the rock stair since she was seven, and by the autumn the lamp at Gannet Point had begun to gutter whenever the wind backed to the north. Her father sent word to the mainland for a new burner. The reply came back with the post boat: none could be spared before spring.

Nobody on the island knew where the brass lotus came from. It had washed up in a crab pot, its petals hammered thin and layered like a flower in full bloom, with a long iron needle running through its heart and a small diamond cut at each end. Morwen fitted it to the lantern housing because it was the only thing that would seat. When she lit the wick, the flame did not flicker. It rose up the needle and opened the petals one by one, as if waking.

That night the fishing boats came home through the Gap without a single man steering blind. The light stood straight as a mast and held as steady as a stone. The skippers said the beam had no shake to it, and they followed it to the harbour mouth the way a child follows a hand held out in the dark.

Her father asked where she had found the burner. She told him it had been in the sea all along, waiting for someone to take up the wick. He did not ask again. Each evening after that she climbed the stair, wound the iron needle down, and watched the petals close with the tide and open again before the first star.
