Fine line botanical stem with buds and leaves
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single thin, dark brown line traces a tall stem topped with a five-petalled open flower. Smaller buds sit along the stem, and a cluster of three leaves with shaded interior lines hangs near the base. The pale cream background is empty, with the composition set centrally and vertically.

You have walked the length of Skarra twice before the post boat comes, and both times the wind has tried to take your notebook. Your aunt Ilse kept the island's flower ledger for forty years, a ruled book with every bloom she found pressed flat between its pages and a date written beside each one. The last entry is in her hand from a March nobody remembers being warm. You have been trying to find something newer to write beneath it.

On the north slope, where the sheep won't graze, a stem stands out of the rock on its own. It is taller than it should be, thin as a bootlace, and three buds climb its length like children on a ladder. Near the base the leaves hang in a loose cluster, each one shaded underneath where the light doesn't reach. At the top, one flower has opened fully, five petals held wide and flat, as if it has waited all winter for someone to notice it.
You kneel and do not touch it. Ilse always said you record first and pick never. You sketch it in pencil, counting the buds twice, drawing the lower leaves and leaving the shadows white the way she taught you. The wind drops for a moment, and the flower nods towards the sea.
When you return to the cottage, the ledger is open on the table where you left it. You write the date, the place, and the words one bloom, north slope, still standing, then tape your drawing in beneath them. In the morning the stem is still there when you look from the window, and you find you are glad to leave it where it is.
