Geometric mandala forearm tattoo
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is covered in an ornate tattoo of interlocking geometric shapes and mandala-style patterns. Solid black linework and fine dotwork stippling create the shading, with large areas of untouched skin forming bold pale shapes across the centre. The design is shown in black and grey, photographed close up on a green paper sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The lorry stopped at Hollin Bridge crossing at a quarter past four, and the driver handed you a folder of stencils before you asked. Sheets of tracing paper, each one a circle folded into a lattice of interlocking lobes, petals inside petals, with pale empty shapes left between them where nothing was drawn at all. The crate was marked for a glazier in Lyon. Your torch found the pattern first and the manifest second.

You had spent eleven years at this post learning that dull objects hid things. Stencils did not hide things. Still, you laid the sheets on the steel counter and traced one lobe with a fingernail. Each line ran into the next without lifting, and along its edges a fine speckle of pencil stood where the shading should have been. Someone had worked on this for weeks. The gaps were too regular to be a smuggler's code and too careful to be a child's doodle.
The driver watched the clock above the door. "Cathedral window," he said. "The new rose at Saint-Aubin. They still use the old method, the one where the bright bits are left blank so the light comes through." You nodded, because you had seen the drawings in a trade journal and knew the shape was right. You stamped the manifest and slid the folder back across the counter.
At the barrier you held the last sheet up to the lamp. Light came through the empty shapes in a pattern that matched nothing on the form, a rose made of rooms. You stamped it approved, then turned it over and found, in one corner, a small pencilled initial and a date from six years before you started at the post, as if it had been waiting for someone to look.
