Pocket watch and key on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey pocket watch with Roman numerals sits at the centre of the design, with a stylised face shown within the clock mechanism. Soft smoky shading and wispy bands surround the watch, and an ornate key with a bow runs along the lower forearm. The photograph is taken at an angle against an indoor background, with the wearer's shirt sleeve visible at the edge of the frame.

The rain has been coming sideways across the Saturday stalls since eight, and by eleven the tarpaulins over Ansell's table sag like wet sails. You hold the umbrella over him while he refuses to let go of the brass tray of watches, even as the water runs off the awning and into the tin of loose keys at his feet.

The watch he has been saving for you is a silver hunter with Roman numerals worn almost smooth. When he flicks the case open, something pale looks up from inside the works, a face as blank as a coin under water, and you decide it is the lamp playing tricks. Ansell says the last owner was a signalman who wound it every morning for forty years and never let it run down. He wants forty pounds. You have eleven, and a grievance against the bus fare home.
You offer the eleven and, almost as a joke, the bow-headed key you have dug from the bottom of the tin. It fits nothing you have ever tried, and it is the only thing on the table that looks as old as the watch. Ansell turns it over, squints at the teeth, and laughs until the rain drips off the brim of his hat. He pockets the money without counting it and says the key is yours regardless, since nobody else would take it.
By the time the market lamps come on you are standing on the wet cobbles with the watch ticking against your ribs. You wind it once, the way the signalman must have, and the hands drift back to an hour you cannot name. Somewhere behind you the rain keeps falling, and the key, still warm from your palm, feels like the one thing in the city that is certain to open something.
