Geometric mandala torso and sleeve tattoo

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large geometric mandala sits across the upper torso, built from radiating petals, stars and hexagonal cells. Solid black blackwork fills alternate sections while dotwork stippling creates shading and texture. Lower bands of repeating triangles and chevrons wrap the abdomen and arms, and the work uses only black and grey ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The compass point had worn a hole through the cabin table, and Hanna Vos had long since stopped apologising for it. Every winter she drew on the same oak, pinning vellum over the grain and walking the dividers around a single centre until the circles closed. Tomas, who had come aboard at Braunston to learn the trade, thought the old pattern looked like frost on a window and said so once. She did not laugh.

The barge carried coal to the lock keepers' cottages and, on the return runs, bundles of cut timber for a joiner at Stoke Bruerne. Between locks there was nothing to do but measure. Hanna taught him to strike a ring, step it off six times and join the points. His first hexagon came out crooked. The second came out true, and she pressed her thumb into one corner of it the way a baker checks a loaf.

By autumn the drawing had grown into a star of eight petals, each petal split into triangles, each triangle filled with cells that nested like honeycomb in a hive. Tomas asked what it was for. She said it was for nothing, that it was simply the shape a thing takes when it has been measured from the inside out. He thought she was being cryptic until he noticed she never inked the middle.

On the last morning of the season she handed him the dividers. He set the point into the worn hole and felt it sit exactly where it had always sat. The centre had never been drawn, only kept open. He began the next ring without looking up.
