Lace-style back tattoo with hearts

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental tattoo covers the centre and lower back, built from lace-like panels, paisley shapes, flowers and two outlined hearts. The work uses fine, dense linework with stippled shading that gives the motifs depth and a sheer, textured look. Dotted strands and small drops hang from the lower edge, and the design is shown in black and grey against bare skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Marrit Penhale had made lace for fifty winters, and she never once made the same pattern twice, which the parish called vanity and she called keeping her eyes open. When the squire's son came home from the Indies with a faded ribbon he had been given in a port he would not name, he asked her for a border to frame it. She sat at the window with forty bobbins clicking like a clock, and at the centre she worked two hearts, one above the other, each with its rays cut fine as frost.

Around them she set paisley leaves that curled back on themselves, and little flowers with six petals each, and at the very hem she hung a chain of tiny drops, one for every day the young man said he would be gone. He laughed when he saw it. He said it was a fine piece of nonsense, and he took it with him when he sailed again for the Indies, folded in tissue paper inside a tin box.

The drops were still hanging there when the tin came back to the village forty years later, carried by a clerk who did not know whose it was. Marrit was dead by then, and the squire's house was let to strangers. The clerk opened the box in the churchyard porch and counted the drops with his finger, and he found there were fewer than there should have been, because the young man had come home early after all, and had simply never come up the lane.
