Geometric motif flash sheet in black line
Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of black line drawings on a white background, arranged in a dense grid. The top panel has bordered bands with skull-like faces, concentric circles and repeating geometric patterns, while the lower section holds many small separate motifs such as spirals, hourglass shapes, crosses and asterisks. The linework is uniform and clean, with no shading or colour, and the motifs are spaced evenly across the page.

Dear Nell, The wagon smells of linseed and wet canvas, and I have been sorting the ornament case since Tuesday, because Mr Pardoe says a fair poster is only as honest as its border. There are four hundred and eleven pieces in that case, most no bigger than a sixpence: crosses that are really stars, little hourglasses, zigzags worn soft at the points, and a row of squares someone cut with a penknife and never finished. Pardoe calls them dingbats. The old printer who sold them to him called them the Lantern Set.

The top border is the trouble. Three bands of faces, each no bigger than a thumbnail, grinning with their eyes shut. Pardoe wants them for the Hallowe'en bill, and I said they had come in a job lot from a mill sale, which is nonsense, but he laughed and said nothing sells a ride like a skull in a good hat.
Last night, after the lamps went down on the Green, I inked the bands for a proof and pulled the sheet. The skulls came off the paper paler than the rest, as if they had been pressed more lightly, or had been waiting. I counted them against the case. There are seven. The case holds six. I have searched the wagon twice and cannot find the seventh, only a clean square of felt where it might have sat.
I am sending you the proof. Pin it up where the light is good and count them yourself. If you get seven, come and fetch me home.
Yours, Tom
