The lift stuck between the third floor and the fourth, as it did most nights after two, and Tomasz Wren sat on his trolley and waited for the night sister to ring down. He had worked the Calder Road infirmary for nineteen years and knew its patterns the way fishermen know tides. Zigzags ran along the skirting in the east corridor. Triangles pointed up on the linen doors and down on the kitchen doors. Arrows on the wall showed the way to the chapel, where nobody went after midnight unless they were grieving.

His grandmother used to say that a building keeps the shape of what it holds. So when the ward lights failed that Tuesday, he did not hurry. He walked the corridors counting, the way she had taught him to count stitches in a jumper. Nested rectangles marked the maternity bay, one box packed inside another. Chevrons with dots flanked the stairwell. Diamonds ran along the handrail, worn pale where hands had passed for forty years.

At the end of the fourth row he met a girl in a dressing gown, barefoot on the cold tiles. She asked him where bay four was, and her voice shook the way small voices do when they have been brave for too long. Tomasz did not answer at once. He pointed to the arrows, one after another, down the corridor and round the corner.

She frowned. Her brother had drawn those, she said, in chalk on the wall before the paint went on, back when the infirmary was new and the builders let children help. Tomasz nodded and walked her the whole way, counting the arrows aloud until she was asleep again.
