Geometric owl in flight

Geometric · Colour · Flash

A stylised owl with its wings spread in a sweeping curve, seen against a plain light grey background. The feathers and face are built from many angular, faceted shapes outlined in dark ink, with a single round eye visible on the head. The palette uses soft teal, blue, brown, green and cream tones, and the composition is centred with the wing tips reaching down to the lower left.

The tower stairs have lost their handrail, so you climb with your palm flat against the stone, counting the way your grandmother counted rosary beads. Thirty-eight, thirty-nine. Below you the moat has turned into a meadow of nettles, and the barbican gate hangs from one hinge like a loose tooth. Somewhere in the west wall a barn owl has been screaming since dusk. You have decided this is an omen. That is exactly the sort of decision that gets people hurt in places like this.

At the top the wind slides through the arrow loops in flat blades. Someone has been here before you. Halloran's surveyor chalk still marks the parapet, a neat triangle of sightlines, and beneath it in pencil: Nothing nests here. The owl comes off the far wall without a sound, pale as a folded letter, and it does not fly the way a bird ought to. It banks in one long, deliberate curve, every feather cut into its own angled facet, teal and cream and rust catching the low sun like shards of sea glass. It crosses the courtyard, dips over the collapsed chapel, and drops out of sight beyond the ivy.

You kneel and follow its line with your eyes. The path runs straight through the gap in the curtain wall, the one Halloran marked with a question mark and then, in a different hand, crossed out. Nobody had surveyed what lay beyond it. The owl had known.

You take the chalk from your coat pocket and draw a second triangle beside his, pointing the same way. Then you write underneath, in your own careful capitals: GO THROUGH THE GAP. Somewhere below, the screaming starts again, and this time it sounds like it is calling you down.
