Owl and dreamcatcher line drawing
Colour · Flash
A stylised owl with wide eyes, feathered ear tufts and ornate patterned plumage is drawn centrally, with a heart-shaped knotwork emblem on its chest. Below, a dreamcatcher web hangs from a hoop with five long feathers suspended from it. The image uses dense hatched and stippled linework in teal with pale yellow highlights on a cream background, centred with plenty of margin.

The lamp in the lambing shed had a loose wire, so it flickered whenever the wind leaned on the door, and Ruth Pengelly had stopped expecting it to hold past midnight. She sat on an upturned feed bucket with a flask wedged between her boots, watching the third ewe of the night turn in the straw. Frost furred the inside of the window. Beyond it the lane was a grey ribbon under the moon.

Her brother had left the dreamcatcher on the hook above the door in October, when he moved to Leeds and said the bungalow was too cold for ornaments. It was a hoop of willow bound in green twine, with a web knotted across it and five long feathers hanging from the base, grey-blue in the lamplight. Ruth had thought it nonsense. Now she caught herself glancing up at it between checks, the way she might glance at a clock. The heart at the web's centre was knotted so that its loops folded back on themselves until you lost where the pattern began.
The ewe went down hard at quarter past two. Ruth knelt, sleeves rolled, and worked the way her father had taught her, feeling for legs, turning, pulling only when pulling would help. The lamb came slick and silent. She rubbed it with straw until it sneezed, and that small indignant sound undid something in her chest. Then a pale disc turned in the rafters, and a head swivelled a full half circle to watch her. A horned owl, tufted like a crown, had come down out of the dark to see what the noise was about.
At dawn she climbed the ladder and unpicked the dreamcatcher from its hook. She hung it instead on the nail by the gate where the lane met the field, so the first light would pass through the web and throw its shadow across the frost. When her brother rang, he would ask why she had moved his things. She would tell him the owl had come to the shed. He would laugh, and she would let him. Behind her the lamb was already trying to stand.
