Blue watercolour owl perched on a branch
Fine line · Mixed · Flash
A front-facing owl with wide blue eyes sits on a black branch. The feathers, wings and chest are built from fine ink linework and dotwork marks, with a decorative pattern across the head. Soft blue and grey watercolour washes fill the body against a plain white background.

The lamp at Skerra Head has been dark for eleven minutes, and the boat is still out there somewhere past the Teeth. You take the stairs two at a time, the wet wool of your jumper dragging at your elbows, and at the top the glass is cold enough to sting your palms when you press them to it.

Outside, the blackthorn that grows crooked from the wall has an owl on it. It sits square to the dark the way a stationmaster sits to a timetable, pale blue in the beam of the torch you forgot to switch off, eyes wide and unblinking. Your father used to say a barn owl hunts by sound and a tawny by patience, but this one is neither. It is simply watching you, as if you were late with something it had been waiting on all night.
You do not know how long you stand there. Long enough to take the spare mantle from its hook, long enough to work out that the fault is the old brass gear and not the wick. The owl shifts its weight along the branch, one talon at a time, and turns its head to the sea. You follow it. Far out, a single green light blinks once, then again, uncertain.
You fix the gear with the spanner clenched between your teeth. When the beam finally sweeps across the water, the owl drops from the branch without a sound and rides the updraught past the glass, close enough that you can see the fine dotted rows on its breast, like rain on slate. By morning the boat is in the harbour, and the blackthorn is bare of everything but wind.
