Geometric owl with red eyes on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised owl face built from angular black lines and triangular shapes, with two red-ringed eyes and a red vertical accent down the centre. Fine black linework and soft grey shading give the design depth, and the wings or feathers extend down the arm in sharp, pointed strokes. Black and red ink dominate against the pale skin, and the subject is cropped to the upper arm and shoulder against a plain grey wall.

Dear Tom,

The owl has come back to the larch above the mill, the one with the split crown. Mrs Hale swears it is the same bird that sat on the lych gate the winter Father died, though I told her owls don't keep appointments. It sits with its face square to the lane, all angles, as if someone had folded a sheet of slate into a bird and left the creases showing. Its eyes are the only soft thing about it, two red rings that catch the lantern when I walk home from the dairy.

Yesterday I tied a length of red wool to the gate post, the way Grandmother did for the drovers, and I did not feel foolish doing it. The surveyors who came in May left their pegs in the verge with ribbons on them, and they never came back for those either. Perhaps the village only keeps things that people mean to return for.

Mr Ashdown's boy says the owl was here before the road was cut, before the stones for the church were dragged up from the river. He says it counts the trees that fall. I told him that was nonsense, and then he showed me the notches cut into the larch, a dozen of them, each with a little red mark beside it, and the newest one was no older than the frost.

Come home at Michaelmas if you can. Bring the good blue ink, and I will show you where the owl sleeps. Your sister, Nell.
